P#34: A Colorful Shot of Wooden Boats in the Water
The focus in this wooden boats photograph isn't really the boats themselves, but rather the colors and lines of them
At first glance this photograph may just seem like a unique shot of two wooden boats floating in the water, but it's actually much, much more. As Terry explains during his 7 Photography Questions interview, the shot really had nothing to do with the boats themselves...
Color and Line
Terry Donnelly: This picture is of two wooden boats in the water. What I like to do as an exercise is break a picture down into one of its primary elements. Some of the compositional elements to be aware of are things like the form, color, texture, line, and light of the photograph. This one is all about line and color.
What I'm doing here is not about boats as much as it is about contrast and color, and the repetitive curving lines going all through the picture -- so it's really all about lines and it's not about boats. (click the image for a larger version)
I think that's a good exercise to do -- find one of the elements of composition and just hone in on that one particular element. This one is somewhat about line, and it's all about color.
In Summary
If you want to see photographically, you need to be able to break a shot down into its primary elements including texture, color, lines and light. That's exactly what Terry did when he created this colorful shot of two wooden boats in the water.
