P#32: There's More Than Meets the Eye in This Picture of Butterflies
Jo Whaley discusses the concept behind her picture of butterflies
At first glance you may think this picture of butterflies features two different insects, but that's not the case. Jo Whaley explains exactly how she captured this dramatic image in a still life fine art photograph.
Through the Looking Glass
Jo Whaley: This picture of butterflies is quite mysterious. You see one butterfly with black wings and it looks like it's flying in the sky, but you see both the top of the butterfly and underneath the butterfly as well. (click the image for a larger version)
You see the butterfly's reflection, and it's actually reflected in a decaying old mirror. It's almost metaphysical like it's going through the looking glass and seeing two realities at once, and yet it's still within that framework of something that is man made and deteriorated.
To Sum Up
Not everything is what it seems, and this picture is a perfect example of this fact. Jo Whaley used a decaying mirror to create illusion in this picture of butterflies.
