P#30: An Soft and Dreamy Picture of a White Morning Glory Bloom

Is this white morning glory picture a photograph or a painting?

At first glance it's hard to tell if this picture of white morning glory is a photograph or a painting. How can a camera create such an effect? Kathleen Clemons explains exactly how this beautiful shot came to be.

The Art of Photography

Kathleen Clemons: This photograph of white morning glory was taken in my garden. I plant what I want to shoot, as a general rule. I have a lot of gardens. This is a weed that I was fighting with all summer long, just trying to rip it out of my garden and I looked out my kitchen window one morning in September just after sunrise and this is what I saw. The light behind this one miserable morning glory was just wonderful. I grabbed my camera. I had the 3G on with f4, ran outside and shot several dozen photos. I will be leaving those weeds in my garden next summer because this is my new favorite photo. I just love it and I love what the Lensbaby does for the background fully.

There were plenty of other plants around it, but you don't see them. Your eye goes right to what I wanted you to see and the light behind it is just wonderful.

Audri Lanford: This one, and in fact several, almost look like impressionist paintings.

Kathleen Clemons: It does have a very painterly feel to it.

In Conclusion

Sometimes the perfect subject pops up in the oddest of places. Kathleen thought she wanted this morning glory out of her garden, but it turned out to be the subject of one of her favorite photos thanks to the Lensbaby and the perfect light.
