P#24: A Majestic Picture of Running Camargue Horses
How lucky do you have to be to capture an image of a herd of running Camargue horses?
You might think luck plays a big part in getting a great shot of a herd of running Camargue horses. You'd be wrong. It's more about paying for the privilege. Scott Stulberg explains...
Running of the Herd
Scott Stulberg: This picture is of the Camargue horses running in France. My friend Jim and I did our homework. We wanted to get some shots of the Camargue horses. They're these beautiful famous white horses in the bottom of France, outside of the town of Arles where Van Gogh used to live and do a lot of his painting.
This is a place where you can actually, in advance, pay them to run these horses around the land and through the water. I didn't just happen to be walking and all of a sudden these horses were there. We paid them money for two days to shoot these horses all over the place, in the ocean, in a lake, in the grass, in the dirt. (click the image for a larger version)
They had riders on both sides and hopefully they were outside of the picture when you were shooting but sometimes they were in the picture. We had them going back and forth, back and forth, and were shooting them. This is sunrise in the river.
You have long lenses, you're on a tripod, and we you're shooting. This is the kind of image that will hopefully make me some money. Some of the other pictures in this series have nice paychecks, because this isn't something you see everyday.
I want people to know that if they see images like this, they can inquire, they can even write to me. Then I can tell them where they can go to capture an image like this. I shoot different things all over the world. If it's a shot like this, there are many times that I will pay somebody to have it ready for me when I come.
Many times it's a group. You go along and everyone pays a set amount of money. They can go as a group and shoot images together as a group.
If anyone's interested, they could contact me and we could maybe even set up a trip like this. I believe it was about 700 Euros for two days of shooting. Then you just pay for your hotel and your plane ticket there, and you can get images like this.
Audri Lanford: Wow.
Scott Stulberg: Yeah, if you want an image like this, it's not just going to fall into your lap. You have to know what you're doing so I can tell people what gear to bring and everything like that. I just love shooting animals. It's my favorite, and to shoot something like this with seven Camargue horses is very special.
To Conclude
Sometimes it's not only what you know in the world of travel photography, it's also who you know. If you know Scott Stulberg, he can help you set up a shot exactly like the one that got him this amazing photograph of the beautiful Camargue horses.
