P#22: A Dog Portrait Unlike Any Other
John Siskin takes a unique and humorous approach to a dog portrait
A dog portrait doesn't have to be boring. While most people worry about head placement and expression when photographing their pets, John let creativity take over and created a shot that let the personality of his dog shine through.
A Well-Schooled Dog
John Siskin: I really enjoyed this shot. This is a dog portrait of Dodie. Dodie is my dog and she takes direction real well -- and she works for treats.
Audri Lanford: I love this image. This is such a fun one.
John Siskin: There is one big umbrella on this shot. It's only one light and a 60-inch Calumet umbrella, but you see how one really big light source can give you almost shadow-less light and how simple that lighting can be? (click the image to see a larger version)
The only problem I would have had with that light source would be if her glasses were facing right at me, but they weren't so I didn't have a problem. It did a great job and I didn't even have much in the way of reflections on the glass bookshelf behind her. She's reading a copy of the small version of the Oxford English Dictionary.
Audri Lanford: That's exactly what it looks like.
John Siskin: I don't know what she's looking up this moment.
Audri Lanford: A very smart dog, I'm sure.
John Siskin: Oh, she is, she is. There are a couple of other pictures of her. She actually drove my car into my neighbor's mailbox.
Audri Lanford: Ouch!
John Siskin: She was very surprised. She didn't understand that that would happen.
In Closing
An adorable shot of an adorable dog. How exactly did John Siskin get his pooch to pose? With a little bit of bribery and the right lighting, John was able to get a dog portrait that was both unique and humorous, while capturing the personality of his pet.
