P#19 Q6C: Can You Share a Couple of Your "Secrets" for Capturing Such Amazing Fall Images?
If you've been waiting for Jim to reveal the insider secrets of breathtaking fall images, your moment is now
Every master photographer has secrets for capturing the shots they're famous for, so I asked Jim what his secrets were for getting those breathtaking fall images we're so fond of. While some photographers would be wary of sharing such valuable information, Jim was more than happy to share.
It's All About Design
Jim Zuckerman: The most important thing is to look for, as I mentioned before, is shape and graphic design. I'm not sure what else I can tell people that they can really sink their teeth into.
Shape is the most specific answer I can give, because the other variables are going to come into play depending on where you're photographing. In the west, when you're photographing in places like Monument Valley, the shapes are obvious. You've got those buttes and mesas, for example. In the east, however, you don't have things like that. There are other things you need to look for.
I think it helps if you're able to use a subject that is easy to identify with the graphic design. A New England church, for example. There's a wonderful small village in Vermont called Peacham. They have one of those classic New England churches. Using something like that as a dominant element surrounded by the fall colors will help in terms of composition.
That's the only thing I really think of that people could take home with them.
In Summary
What's the secret of amazing fall photography? It all comes down to graphic design. According to Jim Zuckerman, your photo composition is going to vary from one location to the next, but no matter where you shoot, shape will always play an important role in capturing great fall images.
