P#19: A Storybook Picture of Mabry Mill

How a day at Mabry Mill turned into the type of photograph dreams are made of

Jim Zuckerman's image of Mabry Mill is so stunning, it's hard to believe it's a photograph and not a painting. Jim explains that this image is just one of many that are possible at this fantastic location.

Like a Scene from a Storybook

This picture is of Mabry Mill, a gristmill in Virginia. It had a lot of red leaves around it and was just one of those classically beautiful settings. It's so perfect there it's almost hard to believe. (click the image for a larger version)

There are many compositions you can take of this. I have many, many variations -- wide angle, telephoto... There are different angles too. Some include all of the pond, others, like this one, include just a little bit of it.

In some shots, like the one I took with the wide angle lens, have a dominant foreground. There's a beautiful split rail fence that you can use as a dominant foreground and I did that. There were many, many variations on a theme here.

In Summary

Make sure you make the most of your photograph subjects. Using different lenses and different angles can result in a variety of photographic themes from just one location. This photo of Mabry Mill is one example of the many shots Jim Zuckerman was able to get at this very special place.
