P#19: A Reflective Photo of a New England Pond

Jim Zuckerman explains what made the composition of this New England Pond shot unique

| | Comments ()

In this photo of a New England pond, the water provided for exceptional composition in a potentially otherwise ho-hum shot. Jim Zuckerman explains what went into this picture, and why it works so well.

Trees on the Water

Jim Zuckerman: This is a picture of a New England pond. The reason I used this picture as an example is because I wanted to demonstrate that water is something to look for when searching for good composition.

Of course reflections are always beautiful. I look for pond wherever I can when I'm shooting fall colors. They make classic shots. (click the image for a larger version)

Of course, the red plays a part in the composition of this photograph too. A stand of trees is just incomplete in autumn without that shocking red.

Audri Lanford: What kind of lens did you use here? Do you remember?

Jim Zuckerman: I think it was wide angle. Perhaps a 24mm.

In Closing

What makes this extraordinary shot so far from ordinary? It seems that this particular photograph wouldn't have been so striking without the stunning red contrast and the reflective pond in the foreground. Those elements combined made for a breathtaking shot of this New England pond scene.
