P#19: A Breathtaking Autumn Tree Makes for a Magnificent Photograph
Jim Zuckerman explains how an ordinary cab ride turned into an extraordinary shot of an autumn tree
This photograph of an autumn tree is more than just a pretty picture. It's a lesson and an example of how the best photo opportunities aren't always the ones you plan. Sometimes, they come up unexpectedly. Jim Zuckerman explains that fact as he discusses how he came about this amazing shot of this beautiful autumn tree.
A Cab Ride with a Twist
Jim Zuckerman: I was giving a workshop in Philadelphia when I took this photograph of the autumn tree. I was being driven to the airport and about a mile away from the airport I passed these trees that were absolutely stunning. I asked the gentleman who was driving to the airport if we could stop and pull over. I got out of the cab and shot this right from the road. (click the image for a larger version)
Notice the shape of the tree. See how beautiful that is? This is what caught my eye. Not only did we have great color there, but it was the shape of the tree that really drew my attention. This is what I mean when I talk about graphic design. Shapes like this one can not be found everywhere.
Another thing that makes this shot unique is the colors. They're rather soft, instead of being really bright.
Lots of times, when you're looking at a scene, it's just a mess. There isn't a really any beautiful design. That's why you have to constantly be looking around for design when you want to shoot fall colors. You never know when you'll find it.
In Closing
How did Jim get this amazing fall shot? It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time. If you're serious about fall photography, you have to make sure you're always aware of your surroundings. Always be on the lookout for great shapes, great design and great photo opportunities. That's how Jim Zuckerman turned an airport cab ride into this beautiful shot of an autumn tree.
