What makes this photograph of the green meadow so special? It is a great example of how one of Bill Neill's favorite techniques works so well for landscape photography.

Patterns in Nature

Bill Neill: This is an image of corn lily and lupine leaves in a green meadow. It is an all green image. (click the image for a larger version)

One of my favorite themes in my work is patterns in nature. I've been photographing in this meadow since 1980. I return as often as I can. It is about an hour from my house. After many years of not getting up there, this summer I got up when I thought the conditions would be good.

It was a sunny day. I was kind of hoping for a rainy day. It would have been nice to maybe have water drops all over the leaves.

I went up in the evening to photograph after the sun would be off the meadow. I got a full day of work in and drove up with my assistant.

We had a blast photographing the meadow. One of my techniques is filling the frame with a pattern. That is what I think worked in this image.

To Sum Up

Sometimes the right approach can make all the difference in the outcome of a photo shoot. In this shot of a green meadow, Bill was using one of his favorite techniques of finding patterns in nature -- a technique that obviously works extremely well.
