P#17: A Stunning Shot of King's Pond Highlights the Value of Simplicity
How Bill Neill captured this amazing photograph of King's Pond
Sometimes simplicity is what makes up the best landscape photographs, as evidenced in this beautiful shot of King's Pond. Bill Neill explains how he got this amazing shot, the concept behind it and the equipment he used.
Beautiful Simplicity
Bill Neill: The next photograph is of King's Pond. It's a beautiful shot with the autumn reflections facing the Vermont sunrise.
I had been driving through the green mountains and found this pond, and then went off to spend the night in town, came back, got up in the dark and came back for sunrise and was treated to this amazing light. (click the image for a larger version)
I used a wide angle lens for this shot. It's one of those occasions where there was so much to get in, the wide angle lens was necessary.
Still, in spite of using the wide angle, there are really just some simple elements in it -- the top of the ridge, where you can see the shape of the mountain beyond, and the trees form a strong line across the bottom. It's not a complicated photograph even though it's including a wide area.
Audri Lanford: Absolutely. It's such a beautiful example of fall colors.
Bill Neill: This photograph and two others that are in my Landscapes of the Spirit book. I had such a great morning. I just ran around totally entranced and in photo heaven.
In Summary
A simple concept and composition can sometimes make the most dramatic and breathtaking photographs. That's exactly what happened with this picture of the sunrise at King's Pond.
