P#15: An Adorable Shot of a Wolf Puppy Pouncing
How Jenni Bidner was ready to capture this shot of a pouncing wolf puppy
This picture of a wolf puppy pouncing is the perfect example of a moment in time that must be captured quickly. In a blink, it's over and if you're not ready, the shot is gone forever.
Jenni Bidner explains how she was prepared to capture this adorable wolf puppy picture.
Understanding Behavior
For the past six years I've been working on several wolf projects with captive wolfs up in Minnesota and I've been photographing them.
One of the projects was for my book titled Is My Dog a Wolf?, but I also work with wolves for some of the other wolf books I've been trying to put together. I really love photographing them. (click the image for a larger version)
This picture of a little wolf puppy pouncing represents the "know the canine behavior" rule.
From a mile away, I could tell this puppy was starting to get interested in something. He started to do that little stalk, and when he did the pounce, I was ready for it because the camera was already tracking him, focused, and ready to go.
Study your canine behavior and the more you know about them, the more you can predict when the perfect shots will occur.
It's really about knowing your subject. If you don't know your subject, study it. You'll get more enjoyment out of your dog for one thing, but also you'll enjoy your photography more.
In Summary
How did Jenni Bidner know exactly when this pup was going to pounce? She knows wolf behavior and understands their movements.
When the pup started moving, she knew what it was going to do and had the camera ready.
If you want to capture moments like the one Jenni captured in this photo of the wolf puppy pouncing, you need to understand what your subject does and why they do it.
