P#15: A Creative Border Collie Photo

Jenni Bidner explains the technique behind this interesting Border Collie photo

Where you stand when taking a photograph can make a big difference, as Jenni Bidner proves in this Border Collie photo comparison. Here she explains how she got the two different shots.

A Change of Perspective

Jenni Bidner: In this Border Collie photo, I tried to keep the dog the same size in each picture. In the first shot I'm on eye level and in very close with the wide angle lens so the dog filled the frame.

With the other shot, I went across the parking lot with the longer lens and tried to frame him up just about the same way. You'll see the differences in the distortions in the ears and things like that, but more importantly take a peek at that red fire hydrant in the background. (click the image for a larger version)

The dog didn't move, the fire hydrant didn't move. But in the first picture that fire hydrant is tiny. In the second picture, it just looms huge in the background.

That is the change in perspective caused by my changing my distance. It changes the relative size of the foreground and background. That is an important creative tool as well.

In Summary

If you want to alter the perspective of a photograph to achieve a specific creative look, change where you stand when you're taking it and use different lenses. That's exactly what Jenni Bidner did with this Border Collie photo.
