This Photograph of a Boy and His Dog Will Make You Smile

How Vik captured this heartwarming shot of a boy and his dog

Vik Orenstein explained to us how she got the perfect lighting (and the perfect moment) in this picture of a boy and his dog.

Timing is Everything

Vik Orenstein: This one is a boy and his dog on the lake. This is an example of my favorite kind of lighting, which is just before dark. This shot was taken a little bit before sunset. The sun was really low and we got the beautiful golden white balance.

If I had my way, I guess I would only ever shoot within a half an hour on either side of the sun going down, but of course we can't do always do that.

I turned around and I saw them, and they just looked so beautiful so I shot this picture. It turned out to be one of my favorites from the whole day.

In Closing

Lighting is definitely important, as Vik clearly explains, but taking advantage of chance and timing also play important role in those one-in-a-million shots. This picture of a boy and his dog in the evening sunset is a perfect example of that.
