P#14 Q1: What Is the Single Biggest Mistake People Make When Trying to Take Pictures of Children?
The one thing you absolutely must avoid when taking pictures of children
When new parents (or grandparents) start to take pictures of children, there are mistakes that they commonly make. Unfortunately, this means most of the shots taken at this time of the child's life aren't nearly as good as they could be.
How can you avoid the biggest children's photography mistake? By turning to the experts. Vik Orenstein was more than willing to share some advice on how to avoid the most common pitfall of taking pictures of children.
Tighten it Up
Vik Orenstein: I would say the biggest mistake I see over and over again is people shooting too loose. Instead of filling up the frame with their subject and making the kid the star of the show, I see a lot of distracting images and the child is just a little, teeny, tiny speck floating in the center of this big environment.
I like to tell people to shoot a lot tighter - really get the kids tight in the frame. Even if you cut off the top of the kid's head, let us know who the subject is and focus on that.
In Summary
If you want to take great kids pictures, you need to focus on your subject. Too many elements in the frame takes away from that. According to Vik, it's very important to get in close and focus on the subject of your shot when you're taking photographs of children. Make your child the star!
