When you're just starting out in fashion photography, you can't expect to be work with the top fashion models from Milan and Paris. You have to start somewhere -- and it's usually with amateurs.

The question is, where can you find amateur fashion models? Bruce Smith had some answers.

You Can Find Just About Anything -- Including Fashion Models -- Online

Bruce Smith: Finding amateur fashion models is a big challenge because there are all sorts of people who profess to be models, but have no actual experience. Especially on the model interest sites like One Model Place and Model Mayhem.

Nobody is on those sites for the right reasons. Most of them are there to improve their pictures and move up the ladder of skills. And it's not just the fashion models who are guilty of this -- it's the photographers, stylists and makeup artists too.

We have a website geared towards the UK called WhoIsTesting.com. That site is filled with serious professionals.

In the fashion photography industry, people are always testing. They're always looking for new photographers, models, stylists, and makeup artists to improve everybody's work. Testing is the breeding ground and the development ground for improving your pictures.

There are key modeling agencies in all major cities. Depending on how good your work is, you can go in to these agencies and take samples of your pictures to the model booker.

The agency might say, "Look, we like your pictures. They're not necessarily the best pictures in the world, but we can see that you are a developing photographer. We can see that you have lighting skills. We can see that you understand what is needed for fashion models' pictures."

They may even say, "We have models on our books that need new pictures. We have new faces that need new portfolio pictures."

Occasionally, I'll get a new face model come through in the casting and she's got three Polaroid's in a book. The modeling agencies are always looking for new, talented photographers to test with their models.

The key is, only work with the high profile modeling agencies. Elite, Next, CLICK -- there are thousands of them. You'll find a listing (at least for the UK) on WhoIsTesting.com. If people do some research, they can find some good fashion models and agencies to work with.

In Conclusion

It seems that furniture and jewelry aren't the only things you can find on the Internet. You can find models too! Visit professional modeling and photography websites and do modeling agency research online. It's one of the best ways to locate amateur fashion models to work with.
