P#11 Q1A: What is the Single Biggest Mistake People Make When Taking Portrait, Wedding and Fashion Photographs?

Find out the single biggest mistake found in fashion photographs

| | Comments ()

There is little room for error in the world of fashion photographs. That's why its important to avoid mistakes whenever possible. That doesn't, however, change the fact that people do indeed make them. And they also make them in the other kinds of pictures they take of people, including portraits, when they use models, etc.

Bruce Smith was willing to share with us the biggest fashion photography mistake people tend to make -- and how to avoid it.

Getting What You Give

Bruce Smith: You've heard of the saying that, "What you put in, you get out?"

Audri: Absolutely.

Bruce: If you want something to come out of a picture, if you want something to be felt, you actually have to put something into it.

People can look at a picture and actually feel an emotion. They wonder what happened before, what happened during, or what happened after the picture was taken.

It's also like a piece of music. You instill emotion and feeling into music when composing it.

When I talk about putting energy into a picture, I don't just mean energy as in the dictionary definition of it. I also mean emotion and a tempo, as well as the actual physical energy that's actually expressed in the picture.

Not Enough Energy Investment

It's a combination of a few different things. I believe the biggest mistake that people actually make is they actually don't put into the fashion photographs when they're taking them what they expect to see coming out of it.

An awful lot of people expect the model to be the one that expresses the emotion. But what happens if a model's not experienced or not someone who thrives in front of a camera? If you want to have emotion and energy and tempo and something exciting in your pictures, you've got to put it in there yourself.

You've got to be enthusiastic and excited and get it across to your subject. That's the biggest mistake that people make is that they don't put into the picture what they expect to be able to see in it themselves.

In Closing

So how do you make sure your photographs have the emotion and tempo and energy necessary to make a stunning shot? You put it in there yourself. You can't only rely on the model to bring life to your fashion photographs -- you need to add that energy yourself.
