P#10: The innocence of a Newborn Sleeping
Capturing the peaceful image of a newborn sleeping.
Carrie Sandoval took the time to explain how she captured this tranquil image of a newborn sleeping.
Bending The Rules
Carrie Sandoval: I took this shot with the newborn sleeping on a beanbag with a piece of black velveteen draped over it. I picked velveteen because you can wash it. You don't have to dry clean it. It also absorbs light really well. That's why it looks so deep black.
This little guy was less than two weeks old. One thing I like to do is experiment with how much baby's can bend. I think people sometimes get nervous because they think babies are so fragile.
You've got to remember how the baby was when he or she was inside mommy's tummy. They were very cramped. I think newborns actually like being curled up tighter. (click the image for a larger version)
Audri Lanford: Interesting. I love the way this baby is bent. You just can't believe the position. It makes it so interesting.
Carrie Sandoval: The toes are a good focal point too. I love babies' feet. This shot isn't a close-up of the feet, but I paid special attention to what the feet were doing rather than just having them buried.
If the black velvet had curled up and covered up some of the toes, I wouldn't have liked it as much. I really like what the feet and toes are doing in that pose.
Audri Lanford: On your website you have a number of pictures of baby parts.
Carrie Sandoval: Yes. I love individual close-ups of the different parts of the baby. When the baby is in the pose, after I get the full body pose, I'll just go in and do macro shots of all the little tiny parts.
Audri Lanford: What are your favorite parts besides the feet, which you said are one of your favorites?
Carrie Sandoval: Gosh! I probably like lips equally as well. Their little lips are so curvy and usually their cheeks are so puffy, it makes their lips even more squishy. I like it when the window light hits them and you can see the little sparkle on their lips.
In Conclusion
From full-body shots to macros of all their precious parts, Carrie really knows how to capture the essence of a newborn sleeping.
