7 Biggest Photography Questions for Brenda Tharp

1. What is the single biggest travel photography mistake people make? Can you give some tips for avoiding this mistake and taking better travel photographs?

2. I'm curious about taking pictures of people I don't know when I travel. How do I approach making candids and portraits of strangers? Also, do you snap the shot and then get their written permission to publish? Do you ask them to pose and do you need releases? I have been told that you can't publish photographs of people without signed permission. What if there is a language barrier? Do you have to pay those people? Please tell me how you handle this.

3. How do I best photograph my kids when we're on vacation? I want the location, but I also want to focus on my kids.

4. When I travel, I want to capture the mood - the feeling - of where I go (for example, I just returned from Italy). However, my pictures just don't capture it. It's very frustrating. What can you suggest to help me create the mood and feeling I'm experiencing when I'm there?

5. What gear do you recommend taking (and leaving home!) when you travel? With the new airline regulations, traveling light is now especially important. What is essential, and what's just nice but not necessary? And what is your favorite lens for travel photography?

6. Can you share a couple of your "secrets" for making travel photographs more dramatic and interesting?

7. Would you suggest one or two exercises our listeners can do today to improve their travel photographs?
