Brenda explains what a wonderful subject the Bhutan man featured in this portrait turned out to be.

A Wonderful Portrait of a Bhutan Man

Brenda Tharp: This photograph is of a Bhutan man with a wonderful Chinese hat on. He's not just Chinese. He's a mix. He's from Bhutan.

In this one village, it was hard for us to really know because there has been a lot of intermarriage with groups coming over from various countries to work in the fields and on construction. Over the years, the faces have started to blend a little bit.

This Bhutan man was a wonderful subject. He owned a very small shop selling soda pop and chewing gum and bric-a-brac type things. When we went past him, we nodded hello and he was very happy to see us.

When he saw our cameras, he started hamming it up, actually!

That was really a lot of fun for us. Here we are. Some in our group were a little bit worried about how to approach people. This guy is making it really easy.

Many of the group got pictures of him without the hat on. When they wandered away, I saw this hat lying there. I said, "Oh, please! You've got to put this hat back on your head." He did and tilted it a little bit jauntily and that's when I got my photo. I was very happy about it.

In closing

Some people are indeed very happy to have their photos taken. As Brenda proved with this Bhutan man, sometimes all you need to do is point the camera and the subjects will do all the work for you!
