P#9: A Photograph of the Architectural Giant - the Gherkin Building

A cropped photo that emphasizes the height of the world-famous Gherkin Building

When Brenda Tharp set her sights on the Gherkin Building, she was able to find the humor in the contrast of its architecture when compared to the surrounding buildings of yesteryear.

Brenda shares how she emphasized the sheer mass of this modern marvel after the actual shot was taken.

A Giant Among Dwarves

Brenda Tharp: This picture was taken in London. For me, it was a picture about the surreal juxtaposition -- the old and the new. In this case, the new being what's called the Gherkin Building.

The Gherkin Building has such an unusual shape, even by modern architecture standards. It's really unique. There it is, looming above some classic English architecture.

For me, there was a humor to it. There was also a sort of visually arresting quality of this monstrous thing looming over what had been tall enough buildings so many centuries ago.

That is really what drew me to make that photograph. It was a fun thing to do.

I've actually cropped the photograph. There were buildings that were on the left and the right that weren't really contributing to the picture. In viewing it, when I decided that I could crop it, I knew that it would emphasize the tallness and the height of that Gherkin Building in the background.

in closing

Contrary to what some photographers say, cropping a photo is by no means "cheating". As Brenda Tharp proved in this photograph of the Gherkin Building, cropping can actually help emphasize the subject of your shot, resulting in a picture that is stunning and impressive.
