P#6: A Spectacular Photograph of Manarola at Twilight

The beautiful Italian village of Manarola

One of the most valuable parts of the 7 Photography Questions podcasts has turned out to be having the photographers talk about their photographs, and share examples with us. Jim Zuckerman starts with this stunning photograph of Manarola at twilight.

Manarola at twilight enhanced with a longer shutter speed

Jim Zuckerman: Okay. I'll begin with twilight. There are two pictures that come from the same area.

I talked about putting yourself in a situation where the subject is really beautiful. In Italy, there is a coastline called Cinque Terra. It's the northwest coast of Italy, just south of Portofino. There are five little villages there.

They are so picturesque, they've been on calendars and postcards and posters for decades, really beautiful. At twilight of course, they're the most beautiful. There are two little villages pictured here where I waited for twilight, just the right time, and took the long exposures.

The one shot, my number on it is ms6934. That is Manarola, it's a beautiful village. This is actually a very long exposure because I wanted it to blur the movement of the ocean. So I used a smaller f-stop to give me a longer shutter speed. (click the image for a larger version)

Summary

Use a smaller f-stop to blur the movement of the ocean, as in this photo of Manarola at twilight.
