Jim Zuckerman shared his method for taking this aerial photograph of Vernazza.

Using a different viewpoint to experience Vernazza

Jim Zuckerman: The other one, the aerial point of view looking down on a village, that's Vernazza. It's just so breathtaking. (click the image for a larger version)

I used the exposures that I talked about, I used a tripod of course, a low ISO, and these are some of my favorite twilight pictures.

Audri Lanford: Absolutely. Is it the ocean there in the second one that is so...

Jim Zuckerman: Actually, that particular evening, they were having a tremendous storm surge. The waves were breaking over the breakwater and townspeople were coming out just to look at these monstrous waves. It's the ocean. It's right on the coast there.

The thing is when you're down in the village, it's very nice. You have narrow alleys and these quaint little shops. It's very pretty. You see that in many places in Europe but I had to climb up a trail to this vantage point. I probably lost 13 pounds doing that, but once I got up there it was just breathtaking.

In summary

This photograph of Vernazza at twilight was taken from a different vantage point, with a tripod and low ISO.
