P#4 Recognize the Unusual: Lions in a Tree
A rare opportunity to photograph lions in an unusual position
This photograph of lions is quite unusual - there are four of them in a tree. Scott Stulberg explains why he finds it important to look for the unusual to create stock photographs that sell.
Lions: Finding the natural in the unusual
Scott Stulberg: The last three images were all done in Africa recently -- in Kenya.
The first one is of the four lions in a tree, which was so unusual because lions are scared to death to climb trees -- because they do not know how to climb down a tree.
Many of them die after they climb up because they fall down and they get killed.
I actually watched it happen on a video on Discovery Channel and it just blew me away.
We drove by and we saw these lions asleep. There were actually seven on this big tree trunk. I focused in on these four. (click the image for a larger version)
This is a new shot that is going to make me some money because it's very rare that you photograph lions in a tree. They're usually on the ground or in a den. We were very lucky.
I shot this with a 500mm F4 lens (very expensive) but I was not that close. I was on the road faraway and I got in close with the lens.
This shot's not cropped at all. That is the image that I shot.
To summarize
Educate yourself on what will make an unusual photograph, like this one of lions in a tree. Stock photo agencies are always looking for the out-of-the-ordinary and unusual images.
