P#4 A Beautiful Child In Burma Makes For A Fabulous Stock Shot
Photographing children in Burma
The face of the child in this photo from Burma is interesting, and this is a best-selling stock photograph. She's wearing traditional makeup, but she's facing away from the camera. Scott Stulberg explains the story behind this photograph.
It's not always essential to photograph a subject looking at you
Scott Stulberg: The next shot is in Burma where I'm scheduled to go at the end of the year, and with the cyclone hitting, I'm just praying for those people. I wish I was there now so I could help them. It's one of my favorite places in the world.
This is in Pagon, Burma, one of the most beautiful cities in the world with 3,000 temples.
This is a little girl that I met. Her mother put fresh chanaka face paint on her, a flower, and a fresh dress. (click the image for a larger version)
I positioned her to look away from the camera, not at me, because with a lot of images you do not need the people looking at you if you're good with people, and I'm pretty good with people.
I teach a class also at BetterPhoto called Eye to Eye: Capturing the Face. It's all about shooting people and kids, how to position them, and how to light them.
This is a perfect example of how I like to work with children. This is one of my better selling stock images and I absolutely love this image.
In conclusion
Having the subject look away from you, as in this photograph of a child in Burma, can create interest when done well.
