P#3: Sunset At Mono Lake, California

Using software to create a glow at sunset at Mono Lake

This is a very interesting effect -- the glow of the Tufa Towers at Mono Lake. I think new technology is changing photography. Purists might argue that we rely too much on it. Lewis Kemper tells us why he's enthusiastic about it.

Achieving fabulous effects with HDR at Mono Lake

Lewis Kemper: This image is a sunset at Mono Lake. This is one that I originally did in Photoshop with assistance from HDR.

Actually this became the cover of the Mono Lake Calendar for that year. I think it was two years ago.

It was a sunset and normally the Tufa Towers in the foreground would have gone mostly to silhouette. But here, I'm able to see those and have the nice glow.

I've redone this photograph in Photomatix and that's the one that you see there. And it even gave a warmer, nicer glow to the Tufa Towers than I was able to get in the Photoshop software. (click the image for a larger version)

So using that new technology to photograph things that we really couldn't do before has just been, to me, so exciting.

To conclude

Using HDR to enhance this photo of Mono Lake created a warm glow and enabled Lewis to create an image that wasn't possible just a few years ago.
