P#3: Capturing The Moment At Old Faithful
Using clouds at sunset to illuminate an Old Faithful
This photograph of Old Faithful is absolutely spectacular. Lewis Kemper has spent a lot of his career photographing nature in Yosemite National Park. He explains how he captured this fantastic combination of light and dark.
Recognizing the moment at Old Faithful
Lewis Kemper: This is Old Faithful going off. This was a Canon assignment. I was in Yellowstone doing a program that we do in the summer time in the national parks.
It was one of those days where the thunderstorms are building up in the afternoon. It was getting close to sunset, and a big dark cloud came up behind where Old Faithful was going to go off. The sun was coming from the opposite direction and lighting up Old Faithful as it erupted and putting that black sky behind it.
It was the most dramatic light you could ever wish for. It was just perfect. It was great. (click the photo for a larger version)
Audri Lanford: That is so stunning.
Lewis Kemper: Yeah, you're there and you knew it was such a special moment. Then a little while later it poured and you had to run for cover but it was...
Audri Lanford: It was worth it.
Lewis Kemper: It was definitely worth it.
In summary
To capture the moment at a well-known site like Old Faithful, combine elements of light and nature.
