P#3: A Magic Moment In Iceland
Sunrise illuminates icebergs with purple and orange in Iceland
This unforgettable photograph of a lake in Iceland owes some of its beauty to luck, some to preparation, and some to nature. Lewis Kemper tells us how he captured such lovely color in this sunrise shot.
Camping out in a motor home in Iceland allows the photographer to be prepared for anything
Lewis Kemper: This was a location in Iceland that I had seen many photographs of and it's probably one of the most photographic scenes in Iceland.
I was planning this trip to Iceland with a couple of friends of mine -- one of them was Ben Willmore who writes the Photoshop books and another friend of mine Marv Miller.
We realized that all the good locations that we wanted to go to were very far from the places where you wanted to stay. And if we wanted to be there for good light, it meant like getting up at 3:00 in the morning and driving to these locations -- and that was something that we weren't all that excited about.
So we decided to rent a motor home and then we could camp at all the places that we wanted to be and be there when the light was good.
This place is Jokulsarlon. We were there for three nights because we loved it so much. We kept hoping to get a sunset, which never really happened. It always clouded up in the evening and we never got a single nice sunset. But we had three glorious sunrises and every one of them was totally different. (click the photo for a larger version)
This was the last morning, the third morning that we were there, and we woke up and you could see the clouds in the sky and you knew that it was going to be good.
There was just this little break when the sun came up and the whole sky lit up. These purples and oranges -- it was so incredible and the warm color of the sky with the contrast of the blue ice -- it was just one of those magic moments that you know you'll never forget.
Conclusion
Being prepared and being patient combined to allow Lewis to capture just the right moment and make this photograph of icebergs in Iceland extremely memorable.« P#3: Capturing The Moment At Old Faithful | Home | P#3: Getting Both Highlight And Detail Photographing A Stand Of Redwood Trees »
